As someone who grew up in Portland Oregon that scoffs at the idea of using an umbrella, a recent statement by the NOAA has me pricing rain boots. According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association, the 2017 Florida hurricane season has the potential to be extremely active and could be the most active since 2010. They have warned it's likely there will be 14-19 named storms this year, 5-9 hurricanes and 2-5 major hurricanes. The Atlantic hurricane season spans from June 1 through November 30. Whether you reside in Florida all year round or you leave your home vacant during hurricane season, there are a number of considerations homeowners must take when facing this active season. 1. Have you created a hurricane plan? This plan should include an evacuation route, family communication plan, stocking up on supplies (including food and water), signing up for alerts and warnings and planning shelter. This may be obvious, but don't forget to share this plan with your family, they can't participate if they don't know the plan. 2. Have you trimmed your trees? Winds from storms can tear roofs off of homes. Be sure any damaged trees are removed and limbs trimmed to avoid the strong winds knocking down branches. 3. Were all projectile items brought indoors? Many homeowners have beautiful potted plants, decorations, pool furniture, etc. outside of their homes. These items can be swept up with the winds and cause great damage to your home or your neighbors' homes. 4. Have the hurricane shutters been installed? If you live within a Community Association, check your governing documents to make sure your home is in compliance with any material requirements or timing restrictions. The shutters will protect your windows from any items which may be projected towards your home. 5. Are your pets included in your emergency plan? If your home is not a safe place for you to stay in, it won't be safe for your pet. Be sure to pack supplies and plan for appropriate shelters which can accept your pet as well. If you teach them in advance to calmly and happily enter carriers, it can reduce stress in an emergency situation. With this busy tropical season upon us, please stay safe and keep us posted if you find any good deals on rainboots! *picture credit to arizonagjrl.com
